Meet Emanuela, founder of 3D Academy

Updated: Apr 7, 2022

After having worked for the Apparel tech industry for several years, Emanuela started 3D Academy with the idea of building a full Digital Hub dedicated to the Fashion Industry.

The place where to welcome independent designers, 3D artists, Apparel companies of different sizes, students and anybody who is excited to actively shape the future of Fashion. Together they work with absolutely only Digital tools to grant Sustainability, Fast peace, Avant-guard Design conception.

Some time ago we got to talk about how companies, even the most prepared ones, are actually afraid to start using 3D in their production and as they think that the fashion sector is not yet ready.

In most of the cases, what is just missing is a person who can properly lead this implementation. It takes experience and specific skills to deal with all the inconveniences you might encounter. In this article, let’s discover together how such a piece of specific knowledge and background could help to smoothen the process.

Let’s see what Emanuela suggests to us!

How long have you been working in this sector?

I’ve worked in Fashion technology for almost a decade. Right after my bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, I had my first experience working with 3D in a software house, when most of the people in this industry had no idea about it. I fell in love with it from the very first day!

What are the difficulties in designing 3D clothing?

The Fashion Industry has been for years far behind others in terms of technology. This is because is clearly way easier to work with digital solids rather than simulate and drape digitally some fabric.

The fabric appeal in Digital has been one of the biggest challenges and, even if we reached really great results, there is still a small gap between the real and the digital draping. Some materials are more affected by this gap than others but I'm sure that, thanks to last year's goals, we will be able to cover even this small buffer soon.

What technical tools are essential for carrying out this work?

The hardware is really something to not underestimate. The latest software requires more and more strong machines and great graphic cards to get the amazing renders you see around. Also, don't forget that the best results come from merging various software.

I love to customise Avatars in Daz before dressing them in Clo and render with KeyShot.

How do you use your competencies and experience to guide customers into their digital transformation?

I have extended experience with all the 3D software existing in the Fashion Industry so far. This gives me the possibility to select the right tool for each customer's need and suggest the right path for their plan. In my past I had the chance to follow several projects, some of them failed miserably and these were the ones from which I could learn the most. The Digital transformation for an Apparel company can be really challenging, that's why it's extremely important to rely on the right professionals: select the right partner, allocate consistent resources, ask for expert consulting.

What do you recommend to companies that want to introduce 3D in their process?

Don’t forget the historical period we are living in: the Fashion industry is definitely speeding up with virtual reality and anything related to Metaverse.

With this late introduction, users will be increasingly familiar with the world of Meta-Human, Avatars, and 3D reality. Therefore don’t be surprised to discover on the websites of the largest companies, collections entirely made in 3D. The digital universe is now feeding this and parallel reality of the Metaverse, proving to be essential to improve the user experience and, why not, also to increase brand loyalty.

Last but not least, there is the topic of sustainability, which is strongly related to the Fashion Industry 4.0 and is definitely not underestimated.

Lately, consumer behaviour has consistently changed and will keep on maturing, becoming more aware and demanding clarity and commitment from the brands in relation to the environmental impact.

About so, we should not forget that one of the purposes of the 3D technology is to serve as well this industry in order to reduce the carbon footprint: cutting proto samples production and reducing dying processes.

In short, don’t fight the change..embrace it!
