The uncomfortable truth: fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world.
Surprised?
Yet it is so: the pollution produced by the textile industry has a huge impact on the planet and the reasons are simple and clear. To better understand, we have some numbers speak:
- To produce a pair of trousers you need 757.08 litres of water... the equivalent of 285 showers!
- To produce a t-shirt you need 2,700 litres of water... enough for a man to drink 2 and a half years!
The high use of water is due to the processing manner that includes washing of the fabric, discolouration, colouring and washing of the finished product. But not only that: we also include the volume of water needed to moisturize soils for cotton and other fibres.
Moreover, we must not forget to add CO2 pollution: 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions is the percentage of responsibility of the clothing, footwear and accessories sector.
What can be done in practice today?
PEOPLE
Fortunately, consumers are starting to understand: 2 out of 3 people pay attention to sustainability and the role is crucial to inducing change. So much responsibility is also attributed to the new generations who are more sensitive to this issue, announcing that they are willing to spend more on a product with reduced environmental impact. The deal would be to buy in a conscious and moderate way, avoiding waste.
COMPANIES
You know, polluters sell less and less. Not only do they get sanctions but they also distance themselves from consumers. On the opposite, virtuous behaviours generate more revenue. Furthermore, generate a favourable image return. However, it is also technological innovations that are not yet prepared for the total recycling of a product.
"62% of consumers prefer to buy products from companies that demonstrate attention to the environment."
